Basic vegan Béchamel sauce

Vegan Béchamel Sauce | Basic Recipe

This vegan Béchamel sauce is so easy to make. It's rich, smooth and creamy and can be used in a variety of dishes or serve as a base for more complex gravies.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups warm oat milk (or other unsweetened plant based milk) 500 ml
  • 2 tbsp vegan butter 20 g
  • 3 tbsp all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste

Instructions
 

  • Melt the vegan butter into a sauce pan over low heat;
  • When it's completely melted, add the flour and stir continuously until they combine perfectly;
  • Add a few table spoons of warm oat milk and stir until you get a thick smooth sauce;
  • Add the remaining the milk and the salt and cook over low medium heat for 8-10 minutes, until the sauce thickens; stir continuously;
  • When the sauce is thick enough, turn off the heat; transfer the sauce into a bowl.

Notes

  1. Control the sauce thickness by adjusting  the quantity of used milk.
  2. Be careful not to overcook the flour after adding it into the melted butter; use low heat and stir continuously.
  3. Use warm milk to help the roux dissolve better.
